In specimens this small, the most likely location for residual stresses would be at the center of each plate. An epoxy-backed, etched-foil strain gage (model #CEA-XX-062UM-120) was used. A good gage-to-ceramic bond was also required since the bonding material shear strength must be able to withstand the high stress gradients associated with the hole drilling process. Type M-200 cement was applied uniformly across the entire gage area to ensure no foil peeling or the formation of air bubbles underneath the foil.

An increment of hole was then bored into the ceramic by hand with a high speed air-turbine drill. The drill bit was removed from the hole and the strain indicators allowed to stabilize before a strain reading was taken.
