If you want to really know what you have it is likely you will have to dig into the registertransfer level descriptions. The truth of this is exemplified by the fact that designing with an IP block most often requires access to the RTL description of the block. One approach to addressing this weakness is to complement design by IP assembly with a higher-level design philosophy known as platform-based design [126]. Platform-based design aims to provide an abstraction on top of the assembly of IP blocks, but it typically cannot provide a single integral view of the design.

As work continued two things became clear: First, covering the design of ASIPs alone would easily produce a book's worth of material. This is evidenced by the size of the work we have produced. Second, we felt that our (the MESCAL team's) insights into the development of communication issues in programmable platforms were not as developed as our insights into building ASIPs. There are numerous issues associated with building networks-on-a-chip (NoC) and multi-processor systems-on-a-chip (MPSoC) that we continue to explore and try to understand.

The Current Environment for Design Having reviewed the basic elements of a design discontinuity let us examine the current environment of designing ICs.
