3 After earning his degree, Alex’s father returned to Henning. He and Bertha had two more sons, George and Julius. The family left Henning when he accepted a job at a college in Alabama. Alex often returned and spent many summers with his grandmother. When he was ten years old, his mother died after a long illness.
