Experimental Analysis of Insect Behaviour by J. S. Kennedy (auth.), Dr. L. Barton Browne (eds.)

By J. S. Kennedy (auth.), Dr. L. Barton Browne (eds.)

This quantity has take place as an immediate results of a Symposium entitled "Experimental research of Insect Behaviour" which was once a major con tribution to the 14 overseas Congress of Entomology held in Canberra, Australia, in August 1972 below the joint sponsorship of the Australian Academy of technological know-how and the Australian Entomological Society. it's not, notwithstanding, strictly Symposium court cases. i've got incorporated, during this quantity contributions from a number of employees who needed to withdraw from the Symposium at a reasonably overdue level. moreover, relatively deliberately, a few of the contributions undergo just a common courting to the papers given on the Congress. to allow this; the cut-off date for contribu tions used to be set at a few six months after the Symposium. I imposed no regulations at the type of the contributions. I did, although, point out that speculative reports highlighting the author's personal contemporary examine or that of his instant colleagues will be relatively appropriate, and the various participants have taken the chance to write down this type of paper. a number of members, particularly these whose job it was once to offer extra normal papers within the Symposium itself, have written reports of a little higher scope.

The question that emerges from this scheme is, how does blood feeding cause the CC to release the BH? Larsen and Bodenstein (1959) hypothesized from their work that the sustained stretching of the gut by a bloodmeal triggered a series of events leading to maturation of the ovaries. Recently, Bellamy and Bracken (1971) suggested that the Larsen and Bodenstein hypothesis was incorrect and suggested that the factor(s) causing egg development to proceed were "nutritional" and/or were due to a "metabolite" in the hemolymph that resulted from protein feeding.

It is generally agreed that the effect can be attributed to chemical/physical differences in solutions of different concentrations and that it does not represent neural interaction (cf. Wolbarsht 1958). In the present study, however, all stimulations were designed to be at the same concentration.

4. CELLS Model system for the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis in the blowfly, Phormia regina animal attracts females prior to the maturation of their ovaries. Contact with the carcass results in stimulation of tarsal chemoreceptors, proboscis extension occurs, and protein feeding commences. It has previously been shown that protein is necessary in the diet of female blowflies (Orr 1964a,b) for egg development and that this protein feeding somehow triggers the endocrines needed in egg development.
