To be sure, Black feminists have noted and continue to note the importance of addressing race, class, and gender simultaneously—that a racial politics that fails to provide substantive equality for Black women is bankrupt, at worst, and counterproductive, at best. The BCPP and the policies and priorities that it has spawned, however, continue to equate Black liberation with a quest to achieve manhood. Ironically, even as it equates Black liberation with the search for manhood, it legitimates and reproduces identity politics that continues to privilege the category of race, exalting the ideal of racial unity as an abstraction that is divorced from the need to work out concrete political agreement and objectives.
