In his 45 years of active duty, during which he rose to the rank of major general, he participated in many conﬂicts against Native Americans. These included the Creek wars, the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, and the largest and most successful pre-Civil War campaign against the Sioux. He was acclaimed for his humane ideas about how to treat Native Americans and was respected by many native leaders. Yet he also had a reputation for brutality and violations of the articles of war, including accusations of raping and murdering Native American women.
