In his 45 years of active duty, during which he rose to the rank of major general, he participated in many conflicts against Native Americans. These included the Creek wars, the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, and the largest and most successful pre-Civil War campaign against the Sioux. He was acclaimed for his humane ideas about how to treat Native Americans and was respected by many native leaders. Yet he also had a reputation for brutality and violations of the articles of war, including accusations of raping and murdering Native American women.

The soldiers increased their fire in spite of the fact that most warriors were out of range. They quickly exhausted their ammunition supply and had to take turns retreating to their horses to get further ammo from their saddlebags. This weakened the attack. No effort was made to control the heavy rate of gunfire.
