Yet in a world in which the state is in many respects weakened, penetrated by transnational and sectoral interests, nationalism appears to be resurgent. It is the argument of this chapter that the transformation of the state has in fact encouraged the re-emergence of nationalisms within states, but at the same time provides opportunities for the non-violent resolution of nationalist conflict.

Economic demands focus on unfavourable treatment by the state or on opportunities for betterment in the international market or transnational trading areas. On the political dimension, there are state-seeking nationalisms, autonomist nationalisms, which seek more self-government within the state, and movements that want to transform the state order, getting away from the classic, sovereign state formula altogether. Managing Diversity Accommodation and management strategies in the past focused largely on the state, although some conflicts were internationalized.
