Finally, she traces the course of public re-interpretations of Japan's war experience in the post-war period through a study of a particular group of returning soldiers - those who had stayed hidden in the vicinity of wartime battlefields, alone or in small groups, instead of surrendering with other soldiers at war's end, either believing that the war was still going on, or fearing what would happen to them if they emerged, or both. The most famous of these 'stragglers' are Yokoi Shoichi, who returned from Guam in 1972, and Onoda Hiro, who returned from Lubang in the Philippines in 1974; but Yokoi and Onoda had been preceded by a number of others, and were to be followed by one more 'straggler' as well.
