Eventually groups calling themselves “Sons of Liberty” emerged in every colony. Sometimes lubricated with wine and spirits, these unruly mobs managed in six months’ time to force the resignation of all the colonial Stamp Act agents before the November 1, 1765, deadline when the act would begin. In Boston, meanwhile, as early as 1764 the notion was emerging that all the colonies should unite to protest the increase and enforcement of 16 RevolutionaRy WaR taxes. To help promote this unity, the Massachusetts House of Representatives proposed to form a so-called Committee of Correspondence to maintain communication with similar committees, which it was hoped that other colonies would form.
