Among the most important students in our university classrooms are those preparing to become K-12 teachers. The responsibility of preparing teachers lies primarily with higher education, and here science faculty and those in education each have important roles. The responsibility of science faculty members is not only to develop the science knowledge of our students, but also their understanding of the nature of science, their ability to understand and use scientific ways of thinking, and their ability to make connections and apply what they know to the world outside the science classroom.
