When properly timed, the plowing operation helps develop a favorable granular structure, which is a primary prerequisite for obtaining good tilth in the seedbed. A poor job of plowing increases the number of supplemental tillage operations necessary to complete a good seedbed. Slipher58* proposed certain basic requirements of a seedbed. They must : ( 1 ) Permit the rapid infiltration and satisfactory retention of usable rainfall. (2) Afford an adequate air capacity and a ready exchange of soil air with the atmosphere.
