Several other anthologies of Lewis are in print, and their purposes vary from devotional readings to collections of quotes on specified topics. This anthology is unique for two reasons. First, comprehensiveness. It draws on all of Lewis’s published work (except uncollected letters and book reviews), something never before attempted. We have tried to represent the full range of Lewis’s thought—not just the popular or catchy phrase but the representative treatment, whenever excerptible, across the entire, varied range of his work.

He is not attempting to write sermons or philosophy, only essays.  . All we can justly say is that his essays are rather small beer; there is no iron in them as in Johnson; they do not stir the depths.  .
