Despite his winery’s growing reputation for fine white wines, Ben is determined to produce the finest French-style reds possible, wines capable of standing up to the best in the world. The first harvest at Bernardus was in 1993, and by 1997 the winery stabilized, producing white and red wines. Ben now has 220 acres of land for the Marinus, Jamesburg, and Featherbow Ranch vineyards. Ben and his wife, Ingrid, also own the famous Bernardus Lodge, a favorite getaway spot for folks wanting to visit Carmel Valley.

The San Lucas AVA (1987) lies in the historic cattle country of southern Monterey County. The southern end of Monterey’s Salinas Valley is relatively hot, but vineyards between 500 and 1,200 feet experience broad temperature swings from day to night. A large piece of the northern section, now the San Bernabe AVA, was granted status in August 2004 after a petition by Delicato Family Vineyards. At the base of the Santa Lucia Mountains and mostly on the southwestern side of the Salinas River, vineyard soils range from loam to well-drained sandy loam.

In 1982 Oklahomans Dick and Jeannette (Joullian) Sias bought property near the old Durney vineyards and established the Joullian Vineyards winery. That same year Robert Talbott and his family started the famous Diamond T vineyard. Bob and Patty Brower started Château Julien Wine Estate in the Carmel Valley in 1982 and built their beautiful winery a year later. Also in 1983, the Galante family planted vineyards on its ranch. Boyer released its first wines in 1985 while its owner, Rick Boyer, was still winemaker at Ventana.
